Beyond lifestyle appeal, overseas-trained specialists are drawn to Australia for what it offers in terms of medical training. Equipped with advanced medical training facilities and learning resources, the healthcare systems in Australia are among the best in the world. Likewise, it demands specialists who can prove their calibre.

Among the various pathways available to overseas-trained specialists, the Short-Term Training in a Medical Speciality Pathway is one of the most practical routes for those who want to gain high-quality experience without committing to long-term recognition.

This pathway allows specialists and specialists-in-training to undertake up to 24 months of advanced or specialist training in Australia. However, unlike the Specialist Pathway or the Expedited Specialist Pathway, it does not lead to ongoing specialist registration in Australia.

Who Is This Pathway For?

  • Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) who are already recognised as specialists in their home country.
  • SIMGs in training, typically within two years of completing their specialist training, who want to gain hands-on exposure in a world-class health system.

If you’re an overseas-trained doctor looking for short-term, intensive specialist training, this pathway is for you.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, you must:

  • Hold a primary qualification in medicine and surgery recognised by both the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
  • Have completed specialist training requirements in their country or be within two years of finishing.
  • Have already secured an offer for a training position in Australia (you cannot apply without a position in hand).

This ensures that applicants are qualified and aligned with both international and Australian standards before beginning their training.

What Type of Registration Does This Lead To?

The Short-Term Training Pathway does not lead to specialist registration in Australia. Instead, you will be granted limited or provisional registration, which allows you to train and practise only under supervision in your approved role. Once the training period (up to 24 months) is complete, you’re expected to return to your home country.

For overseas-trained specialists who want permanent recognition as a specialist in Australia, the correct routes are:

  • Specialist Recognition Pathway
  • Expedited Specialist Pathway

Application Process

The first step in the Short-Term Training Pathway is primary source verification (PSV). You’ll need to apply to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) for verification of your primary and specialist qualifications. This verification is carried out through the ECFMG MyIntealth system, which ensures that your credentials are authentic and recognised.

Once this is underway, your next focus should be on securing a training position in Australia. Without an offer of a suitable short-term training role, you cannot proceed further in the pathway.

With a position confirmed, you then submit an application to the relevant college with supporting documents. This step is crucial as the college will review your background and suitability for the role. The outcome of this assessment will determine whether you’re considered suitable or not suitable for the position.

If you’re deemed suitable, the next step is to apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Depending on your situation, this may be limited registration or provisional registration.

Once your registration is approved, you can begin your training under supervision in Australia. This marks the official start of your short-term training journey.

Requirements

Once you’ve started your training, you must complete an orientation programme to understand the Australian healthcare system and its emphasis on cultural safety.

After three months, you need to submit an orientation report and a work performance report. At each annual renewal of registration, you’ll also need to provide a new work performance report. Supervision is mandatory throughout your training and you must nominate an approved supervisor with your application.

This structured monitoring ensures SIMGs adapt smoothly to the Australian health environment while maintaining patient safety.

Applicable Fees

One of the practical concerns you’re likely to face is cost. Multiple organisations are involved in this pathway, each with separate fees:

  • AMC - Fee for establishing a candidate account and verifying qualifications.
  • ECFMG - Fees for Myintealth PSV services.
  • Specialist Medical Colleges - Fees for assessing your suitability for the training position.
  • AHPRA and Medical Board - Application and registration fees for limited or provisional registration.
  • CPD Homes - Joining and participation fees for continuous professional development programmes.

It’s best to budget for these upfront so you’re not caught off guard during the process.

Why Consider This Pathway?

The Short-Term Training Pathway is particularly valuable for gaining exposure in one of the world’s most respected healthcare systems. It also strengthens your CV with international training experience.

It’s also a chance to build skills in areas or subspecialties that may not be accessible in your home country. And finally, fostering global collaboration by creating professional networks in Australia is a valuable element of this pathway.

Even though it doesn’t lead to long-term recognition, it accelerates your career. It also allows you to return home with international credibility and new perspectives.

Summary

The Short-Term Training Pathway offers overseas-trained specialists advanced training in Australia for up to 24 months. While it doesn’t provide specialist recognition, it hands you world-class skills and invaluable professional networks.

With clear eligibility requirements and structured supervision, this is an excellent opportunity for SIMGs who want to broaden their horizons before returning to their country of training.
