More than 20% of the global population is on LinkedIn (DataReportal), with LinkedIn ads reaching nearly 1.2 billion users. As a result, most professionals look at LinkedIn like a digital handshake.
As an IMG planning a career in Australia, New Zealand or the UK, you need to pair your credentials with being seen. In a nutshell, LinkedIn is the place where visibility begins and opportunities find you.
Before recruiters meet you in person, many will have already searched your profile. If your CV gets noticed, your LinkedIn presence can seal the deal by convincing decision-makers that you’re the professional they’re looking for.
LinkedIn reports that the majority of recruiters use the platform regularly to vet candidates and the most recent jobs are found through networking rather than direct applications. This means that LinkedIn branding for IMGs is non-negotiable.
Profiles with photos get more profile views and messages. Invest in a high-quality, friendly but professional headshot. A neutral background, smart attire and a confident smile go a long way.
Don’t write a general term such as “Doctor” or “Medical Graduate.” Instead, make it keyword-rich and specific.
E.g. Paediatric Doctor | Advocate for Child Health | Future Specialist in Training
This is your chance to humanise your journey. Talk about your background, motivation to practise in Australia/UK/NZ and your vision as a doctor.
E.g. My father often used to tell us “Every child deserves the best start in life,” and it’s this belief that shaped my career in paediatrics. I’ve cared for over 2,000 preterm babies in Pakistan’s neonatal intensive care units. Some of my most meaningful moments have been outside the hospital walls, supporting families in underserved communities. I’ve learned that medicine is as much about compassion as it is about clinical skill.
Now in Australia, I’m working towards specialist recognition while contributing to regional paediatrics in New South Wales. Alongside practice, I continue my academic journey in neonatal nutrition because even small advances in this area can transform lifelong outcomes for the most vulnerable infants.
Avoid simply listing job duties. Use quantifiable achievements.
E.g. Instead of writing “Worked as registrar managing patients”, present it with numbers such as “Managed 20+ acute admissions per week in a tertiary hospital setting, including paediatrics, trauma and cardiology cases.”
Include AMC exams, PLAB, NZREX, IELTS/OET, AHPRA or GMC registration. Recruiters often filter candidates by eligibility. If you make this clear upfront, you’ll be considered faster.
Doctors who post weekly see ten times more engagement. Even short posts make you visible. They don’t have to be polished or perfect. Facts and qualifications get attention but stories build connection. Sharing small anecdotes about your IMG journey, challenges you’ve overcome or memorable patient care moments can humanise your profile.
Storytelling creates trust and makes recruiters remember you as more than just a CV. Even short posts like “What I learned from my first night shift in Australia” can spark engagement and conversations that open doors.
LinkedIn is also a classroom. Following healthcare leaders, medical colleges and IMG support groups keeps you up to date on new opportunities and best practices. Every like, comment or share becomes part of your digital presence. Treat your feed like a curated learning space where your engagement reflects your curiosity and growth mindset.
Ask supervisors, colleagues or mentors to write short testimonials. It carries weight and builds trust.
Recruiters cross-check. Any mismatch (dates, roles, job titles) creates red flags. Ensure your CV and LinkedIn align.
Don’t set and forget. Recruiters prefer profiles that show recent activity. Even liking a post once a week tells the algorithm and people you’re engaged.
For an IMG, LinkedIn offers a lot more than networking opportunities. It’s powerful enough to be the catalyst in your career growth. Every person you engage with and every post you share becomes part of your professional reputation.
If your CV is your trailer, LinkedIn is where you show the full story. It tells not just what you’ve done but who you are as a doctor and most importantly, as a human.
